We can’t train pilots or mechanics to cover the last mile of missions without you! Join us and make an eternal impact with your gifts.

Taking it to the Next Level:

Mountain Week 2024

It’s the culmination of months of training.

Mountain Week.

Up in the mountains of North Carolina, helicopter and fixed-wing pilots test the skills they’ve practiced for three months during Pre-Field Orientation training at JAARS Base.

To the pilots, the mountains present unique challenges not seen in the lower elevations: unpredictable wind and weather.

The helicopter pilots tackle 14 different landing zones on various ridges and pinnacles. Some are tighter and trickier than others, including one called Buck Gap on top of a ridge line with high winds. For each landing zone, the pilots perform reconnaissance flights and find their emergency outs.

Fixed-wing pilots face four unique, challenging airstrips:

Brown: This airstrip has a bump mid-field that can launch the aircraft into the air prior to flight speed, so pilots must manage their speed well. They also need to watch out for wind and trees.

Friendship: Pilots can land in only one direction and must turn around to depart the way they came in. The slope of the airstrip prevents a pilot from seeing the far end from takeoff position.

Avery County Airport: Pilots must battle winds and fly in tight patterns due to rising terrain around the airport.

Strawberry: Probably the most challenging of the four, this one-way airstrip drops off on both sides and produces visual illusions due to the slope’s steepness.

Why Train So Hard?

Many orientees will be serving unreached people in the green band—mountainous jungle regions around the world. It’s imperative that they learn to fly safely in these rugged conditions so they can carry missionaries and God’s Word safely in some of the most difficult places on earth.

“We feel called that God is leading us not just to fly but to fly so that we can equip, evangelize and disciple the people wherever we go.”
