Celebrating the North-South Runway Extension

By Michaela Riley

What a glorious morning to celebrate the expansion of our North/South grass runway! A crowd gathered earlier today, March 22, in the JAARS hangar for the festivities.

The extended runway is long enough to accommodate the airplanes in our Waxhaw training fleet as well as the Kodiak aircraft, should we ever add one to the fleet. The grass runway also has an upslope in the touchdown area–a feature that enhances and reduces the cost of the training for pilots since they won’t have to fly to other airfields to practice upslope training. Great team work by many volunteers and the JAARS Center staff made it possible.

As a reminder to our pilot friends, only the paved runways (04/22) at the JAARS-Townsend airport are open for public use.
