The Importance of "Adios"

Saying Goodbye is important to enable a child to move on.  Goodbyes must be planned and not rushed – done over a number of days or weeks. Taking photographs of people, places, pets, rooms is a good way to take memories with them. Also taking a small momento to help them is a good idea.

Who do we need to say goodbye to?

  • People – take time, not just a quick goodbye. Sometimes it means planning a day together or doing something special for the last time.
  • Places – rooms in your house, special places you go to as a family or that the child goes to, the town you live in, shops you go to…
  • Pets – this can be the hardest if a pet is being left. Do not leave this important matter until the very last moment to deal with.

Help your child fill out the following worksheet: ICC for Children REAL Adios Worksheet

The aim is to help children decide what they need to say goodbye to and how they will take memories with them before leaving.

Post-Video Activity

Owl Miss You

Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Brown paper lunch sack
  • Brown, white, black construction paper
  • Patterned paper for hearts
  • Orange felt for nose
  • Glue
  • Optional: Circle punches (2 1/2″, 1 3/4″, 3/4″)

Preparation:

Begin by cutting out all the pieces from construction paper, patterned paper and felt:

  • Two large circles for the dark brown eyes; also outline and cut out a bigger heart
  • Two medium circles for the white of the eyes
  • Two small circles for the pupils of the eyes
  • Cut out your heart from patterned paper and nose from felt

Assembly:

Glue the patterned heart on top of the bigger dark brown heart.

Fold down the top of the paper bag about 2″ to make a crease.

Then fold the bag in half, but you don’t need to crease it. Just hold it there so you can cut the triangle off as shown below.

Glue the hearts on upside-down first because the eyes go over the heart.

Next glue the eyes together and lay them on the bag with the nose and fold the flap down so you can adjust their placement.

Once you like the way it looks, glue the eyes and nose in place. The nose should go over the intersection of the eyes.
