You’re at a fork in the road. The school year is ending and you’re trying to figure out what the right thing to do for the summer is. Or, maybe, you just graduated, and you’re trying to figure out what the right thing to do for the rest of your life is. How will you ever know? How can you make the right decision rather than the wrong one? How will you figure out which path to take? These questions were very daunting when I was in your position. Where should I go to college? What should I study? Should I even go to college? Where should I apply for a job? Is it right or wrong for me to date this person? What is God’s plan for my life and how do I make that come about?
Well, I have good news for you! There isn’t a right or wrong answer to these questions. God hasn’t decided that you have to study a certain degree at a certain college, and if you don’t guess right out of the thousands of colleges you could choose from then you failed him. That’s not how he works. If it was, then it would appear that God has set you up for failure, but he’s not like that. His plans for you are good, and he’s not super picky about every decision in your life. His desire is that you would love him with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and that you would love your neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:27). He doesn’t have a right or wrong college for you to attend. He doesn’t have a right or wrong degree field for you to pursue. He doesn’t have a right or wrong person for you to date. It’s all about your motives.
Why are you pursuing that degree field? Is it because you want a lot of money for yourself? Or is it because that is the thing that God has given you a passion for and you want to use that passion to serve him in whatever capacity you’re able? Why do you want to date that person? Is it because they’re attractive and you’re intrigued by the sinful life they pursue and you are seeking to rebel? Or is it because that person is going to help you grow in your faith and you share a passion for serving God?
There are a lot of questions in life and a lot of decisions we have to make that can be very nerve-racking if you’re afraid of making the wrong decision, but you don’t have to stress. Simply make each decision with a sincere desire to honor God, and you can’t go wrong.
