Investing in Our Fellows

Fellows contribute highly toward our organization’s vision and mission during their fellowship. In return, JAARS values investing in our fellows. We do that through providing high quality professional, personal and spiritual development, as well as prioritizing growing in biblical community.

During their time with JAARS, fellows will:

  • Contribute to the global Christian movement by serving in key roles within JAARS
  • Meet regularly with their professional coach to talk about their career goals, development goals, projects, etc.
  • Gain work experience to complement their education and experiences
  • Increase competence and confidence in their professional and leadership abilities
  • Network with other professionals in their field
  • Explore their personal calling, strengths and possible contributions to the kingdom of God

During their time with JAARS, fellows will:

  • Meet regularly with their spiritual coach; historically, some coaches and coachees have done Bible studies, prayed together, eaten meals together, or simply sat with one another and talked about life
  • Deepen their relationship with God, bringing his Word and truth into every facet of their lives
  • Practice regular spiritual disciplines
  • Attend monthly life skills training (a.k.a. Life Hacks that include everything from vehicle maintenance to budgeting to active listening)
  • Practice positive interpersonal skills
  • Increase cultural awareness
  • Develop lifelong relationships

During their time with JAARS, fellows will:

  • Gather weekly as a cohort—playing games, eating lunch or dinner together, or simply sitting and talking with one another
  • Live in community in the same apartment building on the JAARS Base
  • Discover Waxhaw, Charlotte, and the surrounding areas with their JAARS Fellows community through outings such as:

    - Apple picking in the North Carolina mountains
    - A beach trip to the North or South Carolina coast
    - Experiencing a favorite local sport at the Lancaster Motor Speedway
    - International food cook-off
    - Orienteering
    - Tubing down the river
    - Aerial tour in a JAARS airplane or helicopter

Our Hiring Process

1

Prayer

Before application season, our team goes to the Lord in prayer and asks that he would lead the right candidates to apply and that the team would honor him with their selection.

2

Post and Review

The job gets posted on various sites including the JAARS website and Handshake, among others. We then work to review all applications and resumes submitted. Applications are submitted through our applicant tracking system (ATS). Applicants select the position they are most interested in, create an account in our ATS, and complete the application. If more than one position is of interest, there is a place on the application to mark a second and third position preference.

3

Screen and First Interview

After the team reviews and screens candidates, they invite qualified applicants to an initial video interview with the current Human Resources Fellow. The purpose of the interview is to assess competencies and cultural fit, among other considerations, and explore specific department options.

4

Reference Checks

If a candidate has a successful first interview, the Human Resources Fellow conducts checks with the references provided on the candidate’s application.

5

Explore and Assign Departments

With gathered information from the first interview and the reference checks, the team then determines the best department to match the applicant’s skills.

6

Second Interview

We then pass along qualified candidates to the hiring manager for further review and a second-round Zoom interview. This interview includes the interviewee, Fellows Coordinator and hiring manager.

7

Offer Letter

Once those references and interviews are completed, the Fellows Admin Team, along with hiring managers, decide which candidates to invite to join JAARS Fellows. Official offer letters are sent to six candidates for each cohort. Candidates typically have one to two weeks to respond to offer letters.

8

Offer Acceptance and Onboarding

Once a candidate accepts their offer, the current HR Fellow coordinates the completion of the criminal background check and all onboarding paperwork. New fellows then stay attentive to correspondence from the HR Fellow and Fellows Coordinator as their start date approaches.

Our hiring process takes anywhere from 30–120 days. The process varies for individuals depending on the position, candidate pool, applicant date and the cohort for which a candidate is applying.

Fellows FAQs

Details & Eligibility FAQs

Who is eligible to become a fellow?
Recent graduates, graduate students, and business professionals are eligible to apply for fellowships. Qualifications for all fellows positions include:

- Biblical Christ-follower
- Value global ministry
- Completion of an accredited post-secondary degree (preferred, though equivalent experience such as: completing YWAM Discipleship Training School, University of the Nations, Master’s Commission or similar real-life experience may be considered)
- Learner attitude
- Collaborative
- Agreement with the JAARS vision, mission, core values, and what we believe vision, mission, core values, and what we believe
Is housing included?
Fellows are required to live in housing on the JAARS Base. Housing is not included in compensation. Monthly rent is $100, including utilities, internet and laundry facilities. Singles are assigned to a 2-bedroom / 2-bath (or 2-bedroom / 1-bath) apartment with one roommate or a 1-bedroom / 1-bath apartment with no roommate. This depends on the number of fellows in the cohort and available housing units.

Married fellows work directly with JAARS Housing to find a unit that works for the needs of their family. For a married couple where one spouse is a fellow and the other is not, we divide the standard housing rate (for whatever unit they choose) in half. The fellow pays the discounted rate of $100/month for his "half", and the non-fellow spouse pays the regular rate for her "half". So the total for the couple is $100 plus half of the normal housing rate for the unit they choose. You may contact guest.liaison@jaars.org for the most current housing rates.

All apartments are fully furnished and include kitchen supplies (microwave, toaster, pots, pans, dishes, etc.)
Are Fellows paid?
Yes! Fellows are compensated $12 per hour.
What are the benefits of the fellowship?
Fellows are eligible for health insurance benefits and receive 10 PTO (paid time off) days, approximately 10 sick days, and paid holidays (approximately 8). Additional benefits for fellows include community outings and life hacks (life skills classes), which are paid for by JAARS.
What will a typical work schedule look like?
All fellows positions are full-time (40 hours per week). Most positions work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour for lunch. However, work schedules vary for certain positions that require involvement in evening and weekend programs.

Applicant FAQs

What is JAARS looking for in candidates?
A JAARS Fellows candidate must be a believer with a deep and growing relationship with God, agree to the JAARS statement of faith, and embrace the vision and mission of JAARS. Beyond that, we require an Associates or Bachelor’s degree (or life/experience equivalent – i.e. YWAM Discipleship Training School, relevant work experience, etc.) and a learner attitude.
Beyond the work hours, what is expected of Fellows?
Fellows are expected to attend regularly scheduled life hacks and outings, which totals to approximately 6 hours per month outside of work hours. These activities are meant to encourage personal growth and community development, and are an important part of the Fellows program.

Fellows are also expected to actively participate in their cohort community. Fellows spend at least 1-2 hours per week in intentional community time with their cohort. This time could include games, food, movies, conversation, etc.
What requirements are part of work hours/paid time?
All one-hour spiritual coaching and professional coaching times are during work hours. Life hacks and outings are not part of paid time but will enhance your overall experience as a Fellow.
How will my role as a fellow contribute to the mission and vision of JAARS?
All Fellows help departments at JAARS fulfill crucial roles that will in turn support mission workers overseas. Each position contributes to the vision and mission of JAARS in different ways. This is a great topic to discuss in the second interview with the hiring manager.
Are there any opportunities for fellows to become staff members post-fellowship?
Yes! While there is no requirement that fellows stay at JAARS beyond their fellowship, historically, we have had approximately 50% of fellows join JAARS staff after the completion of their fellowship. Some of those are able to fill paid positions, but most raise support to continue on in a volunteer/supported role.

If there is an interest in staying at JAARS after the fellowship, fellows are encouraged to discuss potential opportunities with the Fellows Coordinator.
When will I know if I have been accepted?
After you have gone through an initial interview, you will be invited to a Hiring Manager interview where, if the HR team and hiring manager feel confident in you as the top choice, you will receive a formal offer letter to join JAARS Fellows.
What do I do after I have been accepted to Fellows?
After you've been accepted to the Fellows program, please keep an eye on your email inbox for messages from JAARS HR regarding onboarding paperwork. The Fellows Coordinator will also send you a series of emails with information about setting up housing, introducing your cohort, and more. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Fellows Coordinator!

Fellow Life and Culture FAQs

What are the accommodations in my apartment?
Fellows rent fully-furnished apartments on the JAARS Base. Usually these are shared, and each person has their own room. Apartments include a kitchen, cooking appliances, living room, one or two bedrooms, and one or two bathrooms. Monthly rent is $100, including utilities, internet and laundry facilities. (Married fellows rates may differ - if both spouses are fellows, they each pay $100/month. If one spouse is a fellow and the other is not, we divide the standard housing rate [for whatever unit they choose] in half. The fellow pays the discounted rate of $100/month for her "half", and the non-fellow spouse pays the regular rate for his "half".)
What should I bring with me when I move to JAARS?
Apartments are fully furnished, so only bring what you really need, such as clothes and personal supplies. Decorations can also never hurt! Check out photos and a video walkthrough of one of the two bedroom, two bath apartments at this link.
What are some community building activities involved in Fellows?
Fellows participate in approximately one outing per month with your cohort for the purpose of community building. In addition to these scheduled program activities, you will also have plenty of time for recreational community building activities with your cohort and other young adults on campus. Weekly volleyball and soccer games are a highlight for many, along with spontaneous movie nights or trips to the Waxhaw creamery for ice cream! There may also be Bible studies and worship nights for you to join in on (or help plan!).
Am I responsible for my own meals?
With the exception of occasional meals during outings and life hacks, fellows are responsible for their own meals. Campus housing is equipped with a kitchen that includes pots, pans, dishes and utensils. The nearest grocery stores are approximately 10-15 minutes away by car.

JAARS has a cafe that is open for lunch Monday - Friday. The cafe offers several different types of sandwiches, salads, burgers, and fries, as well as a daily special. The cost for a full meal is typically around $10-12.
Where is my mail delivered?
While you are at JAARS, you will use the following address for both packages and mail:

Your Name
7601 Radin Road
Waxhaw, NC 28173

Your mail will arrive at JAARS Shipping and Receiving, then be sorted into your personal mailbox in our mail room. You can pick up your mail/packages Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm.
Do I need a car?
The JAARS Center is located about 6 miles from Waxhaw, North Carolina, and 10 miles from Lancaster, South Carolina. While a car is not required for JAARS Fellows, most people find it helpful to bring their own car.
What is it like to live in the Waxhaw area?
JAARS is located 30 minutes south of the outer beltway of Charlotte, North Carolina, and 20 minutes from Lancaster, South Carolina. We are 10 minutes from Main Street in downtown Waxhaw.

JAARS is located on a beautiful 500+ acre rural campus with recreational areas and a swimming pool, library, dining room, health clinic, RV Park, childcare facilities and youth ministries. In the community, one can find game night groups, volleyball groups, Bible studies as well as other special events.

Waxhaw, North Carolina, is a family-friendly, historic, small town, surrounded by a natural backdrop of rolling hills, horse country, and outdoor recreation. It has creative and performing arts, vibrant music, antiques and good old-fashioned parades.

Lancaster, South Carolina, is also a historic, small town with a state university campus, shopping areas, several festivals and events, as well as a Christmas parade each year.
What recreational activities are there in the Waxhaw area?
Recreational activities in the Waxhaw area include lots of hiking and beautiful parks, escape rooms, mini golf, antiques and thrifting, restaurants, and much more!

Some local areas of interest include:

- Cane Creek Park
- Carolina Thread Trail and Suspension Bridge
- Crowders Mountain State Park
- Downtown Charlotte
- Whitewater Center
What does spiritual development look like on a practical level?
You will be paired with a spiritual coach who will get to know you and disciple you into a more mature follower of Christ as you meet together each week. You'll also get to attend seminars throughout your fellowship on the biblical foundation for missions, where you'll grow in your understanding of God's heart for all nations and peoples.
What does professional development look like on a practical level?
You'll meet weekly with a professional coach (usually your manager), who will give you guidance on various aspects of your tasks/projects. Your professional coach will also talk with you about your areas of interest, professional goals, and future plans, and will help provide networking opportunities for you in your field. Additionally, you will take the Highlands Ability Battery and receive career advisement from a Highlands consultant.
Tell me more about the Highlands Ability Battery.
The Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) is an online assessment tool that objectively measures your natural abilities by asking you to perform specific tasks or exercises. As part of the Highlands Whole Person Model, the HAB is the foundation and starting point to identify the career best suited for you.

The HAB is unique in that it measures your abilities based on performance rather than perception. Exercises such as recreating designs from memory, manipulating blocks in space, and putting images in logical sequence are some of the virtual tasks you are asked to perform within a set amount of time. Results based on timed performance are far more reliable than results based on self-perception or personal opinion. Read more here.
Where do the fellows attend church?
JAARS is not a church, and living/working at JAARS is not a replacement for attending a local church. We encourage our fellows to find and regularly attend a church in the area, but we don't dictate which church they attend.

Luckily, North Carolina is in the Bible belt, so there are plenty of churches for fellows to choose from! Since the multitude of options can sometimes be overwhelming however, we provide new fellows with a list of some nearby churches that other fellows have attended and enjoyed as a place to start looking.
