What is the length of a typical trip?

Each trip varies depending on the specific needs of the host, but trips are typically 10 to 17 days long.

Will I have access to my email during a trip?

Access varies depending on location. You will most likely have access to email during your stay. However, the internet in many locations is not reliable. Therefore, do not expect to be able to communicate daily. In some locations, Skype and FaceTime cannot be used.

What vaccinations will I need to get?

In many cases, immunizations are required and strongly recommended for many of our trips. We will share with you our recommendations once you’ve been accepted for a Refuge 139 trip.

Will I have to get my own visa?

No, we will help you through the process of getting a visa if one is required for your trip.

What accomodations can be made if I have a special diet or food allergies?

If you have special dietary needs, you may want to bring along some of your own food. In some countries, it is harder to accommodate those needs. We should have this discussion with you during your application interview.

Can I take my teenage son or daughter along to volunteer with me?

Your child must be at least 14 years old to volunteer. Children 13 years old and under can also come on the trip, but they would not be helpers. They would be expected to be a participant in the Refuge 139 program along with the attending missionary kids. Fun!

How old do I need to be to volunteer for a trip?

Our minimum volunteer age is 14 yrs old, if you are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Otherwise, you must be at least 15 years old.

What is the dress code?

This can vary significantly depending on event location. For many programs, it will normally be okay to wear shorts to the knee and sleeveless shirts if it covers the shoulder. Women should expect to wear capris, long pants, and/or skirts in some cases when in the city. All participants should bring a nice outfit for Sunday church. For women, this usually means a skirt or dress. Men should be okay with a nice polo or short sleeve shirt and khaki pants. Ultimately, your trip leader will give you guidelines that will be conservative and respectful to the local culture.

Can I bring a group from my church?

Yes, we are set up to accommodate groups. Depending on our trip, we can accept groups of two to twenty volunteers. We make it easy for groups by taking care of most of the logistics for the trip. Contact us at refuge139_director@jaars.org if you would like to register a group.

Are there options to raise support?

Yes, we realize that not everyone can cover the costs of a trip on their own. Many will find it necessary to trust God to provide the funds to participate. Once accepted into the program, we will send you materials on how your friends and churches can partner with you financially.

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes, JAARS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. As a result, trip donations are tax-deductible and will be receipted in the US. In Canada, trip donations will be through Wycliffe Canada and any gift over $25 will be tax deductible.”

How are flights booked?

Our travel agent will work with you on booking tickets after you have been accepted into the program.
