The Terrain

In some parts of the world, land transportation is the best—and sometimes the only practical—option for mission workers. There, mission aviation might be too costly, risky or unavailable.

But in places like Central Africa, the vast majority of roads are unpaved. During six-month rainy seasons, they can become virtually impassable, posing safety risks and delaying mission efforts.

Conditions like these mean missionaries need the right vehicles, special-purpose equipment and effective training.

Our Equipment

Our 4WD off-road vehicles and motorcycles are equipped to handle difficult terrain and use fuel efficiently.

With incredible STOL capabilities, this practically unstallable tail-wheel aircraft’s geared engine, leading-edge slats, large Fowler flaps and interceptor devices atop each wing for added control make it perfect for field training.

This small-sized 4-door, 4x4 vehicle is equipped with very good off-road recovery equipment such as an electric winch, electronic locking differentials, Hi-Lift jack and accessories, kinetic ropes and flat straps. This equipment provides for safe travel and the extraction of vehicles stuck in rough terrain.

This mid-sized 4-door, 4x4 pickup is equipped with very good off-road recovery equipment such as an electric winch, electronic locking differentials, Hi-Lift jack and accessories, kinetic ropes and flat straps. This equipment provides for safe travel and the extraction of vehicles stuck in rough terrain.

This mid-sized 4-door, 4x4 pickup is available in most of the developing countries of the world. Its diesel engine provides better fuel economy and off-road driving capability, and uses readily available fuel. Equipped with recovery equipment kits, many of these vehicles have been deployed in areas where they are desperately needed.

This mid-sized 4x4 SUV can be configured as a 4-door pickup, 10-passenger people hauler, and ambulance. Its diesel engine provides better fuel economy and off-road driving capability, and uses readily available fuel. Land Cruisers have heavy-duty suspensions and strong frames that provide years of sustained hard off-road driving.

This small-displacement, single-cylinder, dual-sport motorcycle is similar to the motorcycles that JAARS provides and trains mission workers with overseas. Equipped with knobby dirt tires, handlebar brush guards and remote ignition cutoff switches, they allow participants in our rider safety courses to transition seamlessly into the vehicle culture where they will be serving.

This mid-sized 4x4 SUV provides very capable off-road travel in the most remote parts of the world. These vehicles can be fitted with all of the equipment JAARS recommends for safe travel in developing countries.

Training and Equipping

Mockup

In the Field

Teams of JAARS Land Ops instructors visit mission workers around the world, providing locally appropriate, sustainable solutions:
  • Specialized 4WD off-road vehicles.
  • Maintenance equipment.
  • Life-saving training in safety, maintenance and vehicle operation.
Having visited, worked or even lived in these places, our instructors can relate to and address mission worker's needs, situations and cultures.

At the JAARS Base

Visiting missionaries can receive the same training their co-laborers receive overseas. JAARS can also prepare them to instruct fellow co-laborers—expat or local—back on the field.

One instructor can multiply the number of people reached with the gospel. That’s why we provide each instructor-in-training with:
  • Land Ops training geared toward instructors.
  • Experience as teachers-in-training.
  • Preparation for unique, outlier situations.
  • Cultural development (when appropriate).
If you are a missionary or mission organization looking for training in remote land travel, contact us.

“Tell the people who sent you here, ‘You sent one person to train seven, and because those seven people now have motorcycles and can ride them to do their work, they have the potential to reach 2.1 million people.’”
